In the heart of the CERN campus in Geneva, the new Science Gateway – inaugurated in 2023 and designed by the Renzo Piano Building Workshop – is an iconic architectural structure, conceived as a bridge between scientific research and the general public. The structure incorporates exhibition spaces, laboratories, a 900-seat modular auditorium and a suspended walkway symbolising the underground particle accelerator.
The auditorium has been designed as a highly flexible and adaptable space, equipped with:
mobile grandstand, stackable partition walls and a motorised stage, allowing the space to be transformed from a single auditorium into three independent halls.
A cutting-edge system designed to support both the multimedia (audio, video) and stagecraft aspects, interfaced with the main control room located on the upper level.
For this project, Decima oversaw the creation of the multimedia infrastructure and stage equipment.
Main features of the project
Advanced multimedia infrastructure: designed to support complex audio-video streams, it integrates various types of signals, including Ethernet, multi-mode optical fibre, DMX and 12G-SDI.
Centralised control system: located on the upper floor, it allows for the combined management of all possible configurations of the room.
Stagecraft
Lower stage machinery: Motorised stage by means of Liftbox with an access platform for disabled persons.
Upper stage machinery: 2 motorised flybars, 12 lines of lighting trusses fitted to the ceiling equipped with PLBs, point brackets for hanging chain hoists.
